NYSCC Supports
Education and Charity
ISELIN and JERSEY CITY, N.J.—
Education and charity are two cornerstone efforts of the New York chapter
of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists
(NYSCC) that were reflected in the
group’s major fall events: the 2010 Cosmetic Technology Transfer Conference
and Chairman’s Charity Event.
Editor’s note: The following report is
based on an account kindly submitted
to Cosmetics & Toiletries magazine by
Marie Thadal, NYSCC public relations
chair.
The subject of open innovation
drew nearly 150 attendees to the Cosmetic Technology Transfer Conference.
Chaired by Steve Herman, Art Georga-las and Anna Gripp, the event featured
experts from government, industry and
academia and presented ways to think
di;erently when conceptualizing product ideas.
For instance, Neil DeGrasse Tyson,
PhD, famed astrophysicist, author, director of the Hayden Planetarium of the
Museum of Natural History, and host of
Nova ScienceNow served as the conference keynote speaker. Tyson lectured
about the need to increase science literacy in the United States and emphasized
how one ;eld of science can in;uence
other ;elds of science, as witnessed by
the “space race” of the 1960s and 70s.
Besides the conference, students, professors and other researchers took part
in a poster contest to exhibit emerging
technologies with potential application
in the cosmetics industry. ;e top three
exhibitors were awarded; Leonel E. Rojo,
PhD, of Rutgers University, received the
;rst place prize of US $10,000 for his
poster on wound healing with Pouteria
lucuma nut extract. ;e second place
prize of $3,000 went to George John,
PhD, of ;e City College of New York
Bill Woods (second from right) poses with

for his poster on novel sugar-based
surfactants. Finally, the third place prize
of $2,000 went to ;omas J. Gianfagna,
PhD, also of Rutgers University, for his
poster on Easter lily bulb steroidal glycosides for wound healing. ;e conference
closed with a book signing by Tyson as
as an added attraction.
A few days a;er the conference, the
chapter reassembled to host the second
Chairman’s Charity Event. Phil Klepak,
2010 special events chairperson, welcomed 140 members and guests to the
Liberty Science Center, located in Jersey
City’s Liberty State Park.
The highlight of the evening was
the formal presentation of a check for
$10,000 to Reading is Fundamental
(RIF), the nation’s largest children’s
literacy organization. William Woods,
2010 chapter chair, presented the check
to Carolyn C. Schmidt, director of development, for RIF.
After the presentation, a cocktail
reception was held in the world’s largest and most comprehensive skyscraper
exhibit titled, “Skyscraper! Achievement
and Impact,” where attendees could participate in a various lab stations such as
experiencing a “curtain wall” test chamber, walking along an I-beam, or operating a crane. A bu;et dinner followed in
the new Science Court, which contained
the kinetic metal sculpture known as the
Hoberman Sphere.
